Gateway to the Highlands, Edinburgh offers easy access to the awe-inspiring highland mountains, lochs and rivers as well as to the gently rolling hills of the borders. Tours are readily available.
Scotland's handsome capital has as its central core a rich mosaic of narrow, winding streets and lofty tenements constructed in mediaeval times around its 12th century castle. Flanking this is Princes Street and the elegant Georgian "New Town" developed in the 18th century and symbolising Edinburgh's "Golden Age."
The Edinburgh International Festival
The Edinburgh International Festival coincides with the last two weeks of the course and provides a rich feast of music, drama and art. August is the high point of Edinburgh's cultural year, when the spectacular International Arts Festival takes place, as well as the Fringe, Film and Jazz Festivals and the Tattoo.

Entry
Any pianist is welcome to join, provided they can contribute, for each week that they attend, at least one major work from the standard repertoire, such as a movement from a Sonata or Concerto. Kenneth van Barthold welcomes the chance to discuss things by telephone, fax or e-mail.
Daily Timetable
- Mornings, 9.00 - 1.00, are devoted to open-house sessions.
- Afternoons,1.00 - 6.00, are available for practice and individual tuition, without extra cost.
The open-house sessions consist of play-throughs during which detailed notes are taken which serve as a basis for the afternoon's practice. Proceedings are monitored and structured on a day to day basis.
Students meet as a class in the mornings to listen to each other's play-throughs. These are recorded and then serve as a basis for private practice in the afternoons. Individual tuition is also available at that time at no extra cost.
Back up resources
There are 12 practice-studios. Digital recording and closed-circuit television help students analyse their playing. The department has listening facilities, and extra scores are provided for following what is played in the morning sessions.
Final Concert
The course culminates in a series of public concerts given in the Reid Concert Hall, boasting two Steinway concert grands. Everyone is encouraged to take part and there is the opportunity for concertos and short recitals. A digital recording on Compact Disc is available for a small charge.
Course Fees
£250 per week, or £625 for the full 3 week course (a discount of £125). Listeners £150 per week. Arrangements can be made to pay by instalments.
