Peter Collyer, Baroque Viola for SaleThe viola is by Paul Bryant. It is a Gasparo da Salo model large viola, with a back length of 17 ¾ inches, but a stop length (with the short neck and baroque set-up) of just over 14 inches, so you don’t need to be a giant to play it.
I bought the instrument from the maker in 1988 and used it for my baroque viola lessons, and then for a few projects with the Academy of Ancient Music and the English Baroque Soloists in 1989 and 1990. In 1993 it had a new fingerboard, bridge and tailpiece fitted by Bridgewood and Neitzert in a set-up that produced a stronger sound, and it was used by Anna McDonald on a couple of occasions with the Gabrieli Consort in 1993/94.
I don’t think I ever explored the full potential of this instrument. The understanding of stringing has moved on a great deal since I was playing it 20 years ago, and I suspect that it would be possible to get an excellent sound out of it with plain gut, equal tension strings and some adjustments to the set-up.
I'm asking for offers around £3000. Anyone interested in viewing it is welcome to contact me to arrange to meet. I will be at St. George’s, Hanover Square on 3 rd December and The Warehouse on 11th and can bring it with me on those days. Other days, either in Bushey or in London, would be possible too.
