Biography
Nicholas joined the Orchestra of the Swan, based in Stratford-upon-Avon, as co-principal Flute in 1997.

He has toured with orchestras to America (New York Alice Tully Hall), Switzerland, Germany (Berlin Konzerthaus), France, Austria, and Holland (Royal Concertgebouw).

In 1995, Nicholas joined the Ventus Wind Quartet who have given recitals throughout the UK. The quartet have also been invited to perform at the International Music Festival at Annecy, France in August 1996 and 1997, the Britten Pears School Wind Ensembles Course 1997 and the Un Hivern A Mallorca 2000 Festival in Spain.

In August 2000 Nicholas performed with the Italian Soprano Yvetta Tannenberger in a recital marking the end of the Tibor Varga festival in Switzerland.

Orchestral Work
Orchestras: Haverhill Sinfonia, Liverpool Sinfonietta, National Concert Orchestra, Northern Ballet, Orchestra of the Swan.

Nicholas's orchestral work also includes The Mozart Festival Orchestra, The Orchestra of the Swan (co-principal), The Welsh Chamber Orchestra (principal), National Concert Orchestra, National Festival Orchestra (principal), Northern Chamber Orchestra, Manchester Concert Orchestra, Travelling Opera (principal), D'Oyly Carte Opera, Liverpool Sinfonia (principal), Carl Rosa Opera (principal), New English Concert Orchestra, English Pro Musica, Mid Wales Opera (principal), Commedia dell'Arte Operetta Company (principal) and European Opera Centre (principal).

As a student Nicholas worked with the Britten-Pears Orchestra, the Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony and Chamber Orchestras (along with other ensembles and recital performances), the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama Symphony and Chamber Orchestras (along with other ensembles and recital performances), and the Chetham's School of Music Chamber Orchestra with whom he toured to Germany and the USA.

Education
Nicholas's schooling took place at Chetham's School of Music (1989), Nicholas's graduate studies took place at Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (BA in Musical Studies), Birmingham Conservatoire (Master of Arts: Distinction)

  • Nicholas received the James Fernley Scholarship for the continuation of Orchestral Studies (1994)
  • Aberdeen International Music Festival Ensemble Competition (finalist)
  • Symphony Hall Recital Competition in Birmingham (finalist)

Teachers: Alan Lockwood (former Principal BBC Philharmonic) 1988-1991, Richard Chester MBE (former Principal RSNO) 1991-1994, Kevin Gowland (Principal Opera North, former Principal CBSO) 1994-1997.

Nicholas has performed in Masterclasses given by William Bennett, Susan Milan, Peter Lukas-Graff, Peter Lloyd, Charles Dagnino, Philippa Davies, and Elena Duran.
