Michael Elderkin is an avid performer and collaborator in the UK and abroad. He has performed professionally with the London Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, North Carolina Opera, North Carolina Ballet, London International Orchestra, Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra, Surrey Opera, Aegis Orchestra, and Ulysses Symphony Orchestra, as well as actively freelancing in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Michael is also a strong proponent of chamber music. He is currently a member of the 9-5 Chamber Ensemble, the Gilbert Ensemble, and Two and a Half Reeds.
In addition to playing the bassoon, Michael composes music for concert, film, television, and musical theatre. Most recently, he premiered his first musical Mascherato in Milton Court Theatre, London, as a recipient of the Barbican Centre's colLABorate grant.
With interests in film music, arranging, and orchestrating, Michael has worked extensively as a conductor and arranger for the Empire Film Music Ensemble, also having freelanced as an arranger and copyist for numerous other ensembles.
Michael attended both the Eastman School of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating with Honours. His teachers have included John Hunt, Daniel Jemison, Helen Simons, Peter Whelan, and Dominic Morgan (contrabassoon).
