Biography After applying to Graduate Schools in the United States, Bernard was offered a full scholarship to study for a Masters Degree at Yale University which he completed in 1997. Bernard recently became the first viola player ever to be awarded a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at a Canadian University with a major in viola performance, his thesis being 'From Manuscript to Publication: Aspects of Lionel Tertis' Style of Viola Playing as Reflected in his 1936 Edition of Ralph Vaughan Williams' Suite for Viola and Orchestra.' Bernard was the founding member of the Delphinus String Quartet, and founder and director of chamber ensembles Chameleon Cymru and Chameleon Canada. Bernard performed at the Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto in December 2006. In addition to viola performances, Bernard has narrated at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Norfolk CT, with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and has been broadcast nationwide on CBC, Canada. Orchestral Work Bernard's orchestral work also includes BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Emerald Ensemble, the National Chamber Orchestra of Wales, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale (principal), Yale Symphony Orchestra, (principal), National Youth Orchestra of Wales, London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (founder member). Bernard's session work includes the Tess of the D'Urbevilles session for Cool Music and sessions with The Manic Street Preachers. Bernard has also played in Quincy Jones's Orchestra at the opening of the Atlantis Hotel, the Bahamas. Education Prizes and Awards Bernard was also awarded the D.C. and H.L. Knigge Graduate Scholarship at UBC and the George Lauder Greenway Fellowship at Yale Unversity. Teachers: David Harding, Jesse Levine, Simon Rowland-Jones, Roger Best. Masterclasses include Roberto Diaz, Paul Neubauer, Tokyo String Quartet, Colorado String Quartet, Chilingrian Quartet and the Arditti String Quartet.
