Diana's orchestral work also includes

As a chamber musician Diana regularly performs with the Kreutzer Quartet, leader Peter Sheppard Skaerved and she has participated in the London Festival of Chamber Music playing with the English String Quartet, leader, Diana Cummings. She performs regularly with her duo partner, pianist, Jonathan Beatty. She also frequently works as violist in violin/viola duos.

Diana Mathews pursues an active performing career as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. She studied with Yuko Inoue and Matthew Souter at the Royal Academy of Music where she gained a BMus with First Class Honours and MMus with Distinction. Prizes include the Theodore Holland Prize, Sidney Griller Memorial Prize, the Alfred Gibson Prize and the Kenneth Page Foundation Viola Competition.

Diana has a keen interest in contemporary music and enjoys working alongside composers. Works dedicated to her have included Richard Bullen's 'Rite' for solo viola and Roger Carter's 'Deep Thoughts' for viola and piano. She has also performed in the World Premiere of American composer, Michael Rose's 'Hopeful Monsters' as well as giving the UK Premiere of his Third Viola Sonata, 'The Pedagogy of Grief'.

Solo performances include Martinu's Rhapsody-Concerto with the Isis Chamber Orchestra, Berlioz' "Harold in Italy" with Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra and Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola with the Haydon Chamber Orchestra. Diana loves bringing beautiful yet lesser known works to her audiences, and in line with this, performed, alongside Gustav Holst's 'Lyric Movement', Imogen Holst's 'Joyce's Divertimento' with the Tudor Orchestra.

As a recitalist, Diana's performances, with her duo partner Jonathan Beatty (piano), have included concerts for the Concerts in the West recital series, at Warwick Arts Centre and for the Oxshott and Cobham Music Society.

Diana freelances with various orchestras including the Royal Opera House Orchestra.

Diana plays on a Pietro Antonio Testore viola (1780).

Teaching experience

Diana's teaching career has included string quartet coaching at Wimbledon and Putney High Schools, sectional coaching for the Marryat Players and Stoneleigh Training Orchestra, group teaching of both the violin and viola at King Solomon Academy and also individual (violin, viola and piano) and group teaching at the Colourstrings Music School in Roehampton. She also teaches privately.
