Vivaldi 'Summer', from a performance of the 4 seasons by the Brunelleschi Ensemble, lead by Orpheus Papafilippou, at St James Piccadilly, London 27th June 2008.

Orpheus has performed a wide variety of orchestral and chamber repertoire. He is a founder member of several chamber groups including the Brunelleschi String Quartet, Duo Concertante and Del Plata Tango Quintet.

Whilst still a student at Trinity College of Music, Orpheus led the Wren Ensemble as well as a number of the other college ensembles with performances including Brahms Serenade No1, Poulenc Le Bestaire, Ibert Capriccio, Saint-Saens Septour, Villa-Lobos Choros No7, Rheinberger Nonet, Finzi, Francaix Octour, Beethoven Sextet, Boccherini, Copland, Warlock, Verdi and The Seven Deadly Sins (World Premier TCM Composers), Schoenberg Chamber Symphony Op 9 and Malcom Arnold Symphony No 4.

Orpheus has given violin and piano recitals internationally; in Greece, Korea, Australia and the UK including: St Martin in the Fields, Bath Recital Artists Trust, Trinity Arts Centre Gainsborough, Foundling Museum London, QPAC Concert Hall Brisbane, Australia, National Odeon of Music and Athenaeum Concert Hall Athens. Recitals in Summer Festivals in Greece include Meltemi Rafina and Limni of Euvia.

Solo Bach recitals include St Brides, Lauderdale House, Bloomsbury Baptist Church and St Magnus the Martyr. In May 2007 he gave the World Premier of Preobrajenie for Solo Violin in St Mary Le Strand written for him by Aziza Sadikova.

Orpheus has performed as a Soloist in Concertos by:

  • Mozart Violin Concerto No.5 in A as soloist with the Patrick Noronha Camerata at St.Paul's Church, Covent Garden, October 2008.
  • Vivaldi Four Seasons as Soloist and Director with the Brunelleschi Ensemble, performances at St James's Piccadilly, Charlton House and Regent Hall in London, June 2008.
  • Vivaldi Winter from the Seasons & Concerto for two Violins in A minor, Campion Chamber Orchestra in Athens.
  • Bach Double Concerto ELLSO Performance Ensemble in London, conducted by Leo Patsalides. June 2007.
  • Vivaldi Concerto for Four Violins in B Minor Arion Orchestra, St James's Piccadilly conducted Brien Stait, February 2008.
  • Bach Brandenburg Concerto No 1 Violino Piccolo Concertato & Handel Concerto Grosso in C 'Alexander's Feast' Solo Violin, Orchestra of St Paul's, Covent Garden conducted by Ben Palmer, February 2008

As a chamber musician, Orpheus is the leader and founder member of the Brunelleschi String Quartet. Appearances include Science Museum, Lincoln's Inn, Painted Hall Greenwich, Eye Festival, Leominster Festival, Charlton House. English Pen "The Right to Dissent" Dover House Whitehall, Celebration of 300th Anniversary of the Union of England and Scotland in the presence of Cabinet Ministers, MPs and SMPs and the Royal Festival Hall, RFH Revival.

In February 2008 they gave the World Premier of "Heart Has No Measure" by Denise Mangiardi.

Orpheus was a founder member of Duo Concertante (violin & viola duo) from 1998-2004. The duo performed music from Bach to contemporary, with special emphasis on the music of Mozart and his contemporaries Michael Haydn and FA Hoffmeister.

Performances include the Guildford International Music Festival, St John's Smith Square, concerts and workshops for children for City of Westminster Council, Music in Libraries Series, University of Essex, Bideford Music Club and the National Portrait Gallery, Where they gave the world premier of Double portrait by Simon Speare in May 2004.

Orpheus is a founder member and the violinist of the Del Plata Tango Quintet. They perform Traditional Tangos, Tango Nuevo by Astor Piazzolla, contemporary dance music and Latin folk music. They have performed at the Grand Re-Opening of Mont Orgueil Castle, Jersey Arts Centre, Clare College Cambridge, Canning House and the British Library for the Arts Council of England.

Orpheus also works as a Violinist/Actor in the theatre. He has collaborated closely with directors in producing the music for plays. He has experience of composing and arranging music, recording and performing live, both as solo violinist and actor.

Orpheus's orchestral work also includes the Amadeus Orchestra (leader), Arion Orchestra (principal 2nd violin and 1st violins), Canterbury Choral Society, Guernsey Symphony Orchestra, Hounslow Light Opera (leader), London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, London Oratory Sinfonia (Leader), London Ripieno Singers and Orchestra (leader), London Soloists Chamber Orchestra, Redhill Sinfonia, Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, Stanley Hall Opera, Studio Opera Queensland (leader), The Centenary Company, Trinity SU Symphony Orchestra (leader), Trinity College of Music Chamber Orchestra (principal 2nd).

SHOWS: The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Calamity Jane.

Orpheus' performances of contemporary repertoire include London Breakbeat Orchestra recording at BBC Studios Maida Vale for Radio 1's Annie Nightingale Show, Facing the Carnyx by Steven Montague National Portrait Gallery 150th Anniversary celebrations TCM Contemporary Music Group (leader) Wiredup Festival 2007 and Schoenberg Chamber Symphony No.1 Op 9, and Pierrot Lunaire Op 21 with soprano Linda Hirst conducted by Jonathan Tilbrook.

Education
Orpheus's graduate studies took place at the Royal Academy of Music - BMus Hons in Performance, LRAM Diploma; Trinity College of Music - Postgraduate Advanced Diploma and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Australia.

  • Winner Recital Class performing Elgar Sonata & Achron Hebrew Melody
  • Richmond Upon Thames Music Festival
