Biography
Adam Penketh studied the Tenor and Alto Trombone at The Royal College of Music (RCM), gaining a 2:1 for his Bachelor of Music Degree with honours, progressing onto the Masters of Performance postgraduate course at the RCM. During his studies, Adam performed as principal in the RCM Symphony Orchestra with Bernard Haitink, the New Perspectives Ensemble and the RCM Big Band. Adam won many awards including the RCM Brass Ensemble Prize, and the Herbert Samuel Memorial Prize for gaining a first-class distinction in his graduate recital. Throughout his time at the RCM, Adam was generously supported by Mrs Amaryllis Flemming, the Martin Musical Trust/Philharmonia Scholarship fund, the Anne Driver Trust and the Alain Burke Memorial Trust.
In May 2009, after a successful audition, Adam won a trial for the position of Principal Trombone with the Orquesta Filarmonica de Santiago, who are resident in South America's most prestigious opera house El Teatro Municipal de Santiago. After a successful trial-period of 2 months, Adam was offered the Principal Trombone job, which he accepted with delight.
The next 18 months saw Adam perform in many different Operas, Ballets and Symphonic concerts in what were two hectic and demanding seasons. Operatic highlights include Puccini's Turandot and Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, whilst Adam enjoyed a run of Ravel's Bolero and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony during the summer months of the season. Adam resigned in October 2010 to pursue his career back in the UK.
Adam has a wide-range of experience with many different freelance orchestras, ensembles and big bands from across London. Adam rehearsed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra in many side-by-side projects, as well as playing with the English Philharmonia, Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, English Brass Ensemble, Capital Philharmonic, Cheltenham Festival Ensemble and the Opera de Bauge Touring Company. In February 2009, Adam performed live on BBC Radio One's Live Lounge Sessions with pop star Duffy, to over 3 million listeners worldwide, as well playing live on Channel 4's Somerset House series with artist Mika. Adam also performed as solo trombone in the big band for the Duke Ellington Sacred Concert with the London Concerts Choir at Cadogan Hall.
Adam can be seen playing on BBC Radio One through YouTube - Duffy, Stepping Stone, Live, and Duffy, You Do Something to Me, Live.
It has been a delight to experience Adam as both a performer and friend. He brought an enthusiasm and spark to work that was reflected in his incredible performances as leader of the trombone section. Iris Gast - Orchestral Manager, Orquesta Filarmonica de Santiago. October 2010.
A very polished and enjoyable recital, displaying a very high level of technical control and musical versatility. Gary Ryan - Chair of Adam's Graduation Level Recital, Royal College of Music. April 2008.
