Biography
Since 1983 Joseph has freelanced worldwide, from principal oboe with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe to most major London symphony orchestras. He has performed in Japan, China, Korea, Australia, South and North America, Mexico and throughout Europe. He has extensive experience of playing opera, ballet, West End shows, chamber orchestra, schools/educational work with various orchestras, studio session work and contemporary music.

As a member of Ensemble Modern/Frankfurt for over 20 years, he worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Hans Werner Henze, Helmut Lachenmann, Klaus Huber, Heinz Holliger, Oliver Knussen, George Benjamin, Steve Reich, Peter Eötvös, György Kurtag, György Ligeti, Emmanuel Nunes, Maurizio Kagel, John Cage, Frank Zappa and many more.

Since 2008 he has played extensively as guest principal oboe for the London Symphony Orchestra, under Valery Gergiev, Sir Colin Davis, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Harding and Kristjan Järvi etc.

Education
Joseph's graduate studies took place at Cambridge University (MA Modern Languages), the Royal Academy of Music (1978 - 1980) and the Freiburg Musikhochschule (1980 - 1982). From 1988 - 91 he trained and qualified as an Alexander Teacher with Patrick Macdonald F.M. Alexander's personal training assistant, followed by study with Marjory Barlow, Alexander's neice.

As an expert Alexander teacher, Joseph is investigating performance centred teaching and learning, integrating the Alexander technique into the act of performing music and how this can transform preparation for stagework. In May 2009 he co-organised the highly successful 7th International Conference for Alexander Technique Teachers in Music Education, hosted by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he is a professor of oboe and academic studies as well as Alexander Teacher. He also teacher the Alexander Technique for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
