Biography

Joanna leads a busy and varied life as an orchestral and chamber musician.

In April 2006 Joanna was appointed principal flute with the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Previous appointments include sub-principal flute of the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera for three years and principal second flute with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, a position she held for six years.

She has also been invited to trial for principal flute with the Opera North Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and has trialed for second flute with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra.

As a chamber musician Joanna has appeared at King's Place (Beethoven for Wind series), the Aix-en-Provence festival, Dobris in the Czech republic and Villecroze, France, working with the oboist Maurice Bourgue, with whom she completed further study in Paris in 2004.

Joanna has played for the chamber opera ensemble of Music Theatre Wales since 2005, and was commended in The Times for her playing in a recent production of Curlew River at Hampstead and Highgate Festival.

She is the woodwind coach for the NYOS Variations Ullapool Summer Chamber Music Course, and performs regularly with the Edinburgh Quartet. She is a founder member of Ensemble Alba, and recorded a CD of chamber works by Tippett with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra. She has performed in chamber concert tours with the harpist Katherine Thomas and the soprano Karen Acampora.

Joanna is also an external examiner at the RSAMD in Glasgow, and has held teaching posts at the RWCMD and Bath Spa University.

Joanna's orchestral work also includes guest Principal Flute with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera North, Welsh Chamber Orchestra and Scottish Ensemble, and extra work for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia and Sinfonia ViVA.

Joanna's Education Work also includes BBC Symphony Orchestra Education, National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - outreach coaching, LSO Panufnik Young Composers's Workshops.

Education
Joanna's schooling took place at Uppingham School, Rutland (1986 - 1988) Joanna's graduate studies took place at the Royal Northern College of Music gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Studies in Performance, Distinction from 1992 - 1994. She also gained a BA Hons at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge (1989 - 1992).
