Mardyah created and leads World Class Strings which is a world music project applied directly onto the first stages of string playing. The project has been devised in three forms. Firstly a one to three day workshop, a six-week course and a one term introductory course and are now running it as a full one year to three year project.
World class strings aims to introduce children to string playing, improvising and composition in an inspiring way, drawing on material from all over the world as well as different genres, including jazz, pop and classical. It is an opportunity for children that wouldn't normally have the chance to learn, to have hands on experience, even if it is only for six weeks. One of the aims of a six week project is, that having had this access they would have a strong idea of what music means to them and perhaps an idea of how they may like to pursue it, not necessarily just in a classical genre or even a string instrument but opening them up to the idea of pursuing jazz or composition or indeed any type of world music. We use a map to put this into geographical context and play ourselves to and with the pupils as much as possible. We endeavour to make the sessions as colourful and lively as possible encouraging the class teacher to participate and generally have lots of fun.
The classes are up to thirty children, 20 on violin and 10 on cello. The idea is that over a period of time some children will decide string playing is not for them and some will start to have individual tuition or smaller group lessons, depending on what is practical in each given situation, to compliment their class lessons. This has already started to happen in some schools that have taken on the project.
Each session is 45 minutes long and is broken down into two sections. For 15 to 20 minutes we do warm ups, physical and vocal as well as, workshop games and exercises with ragging boxes(digital tabla and drone) or recordings. For the remaining 25 to 30 minutes we put the children on the instruments and teach them technique and repertoire written by our selves which consists of progressive pieces accompanied either by written parts, traditional melodies or improvisations in different cultural styles.
