  CATHERINE WHITE  (Flute, Piccolo)» 

Biography

Catherine has recently graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She regularly plays with various orchestras and ensembles in South Wales, including Sinfonia Cymru, Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera (extra), RWCMD Symphony Orchestra (princ 2004-2008) and the National Youth Orchestra of Wales (2004-07), including a workshop and concert in collaboration with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Catherine has also played with the Scottish Ballet Orchestra (2009).

Catherine was recently chosen to represent the RWCMD on their trip to China as part of the Welsh Assembly Government's 'Wales Week'. Catherine had the opportunity to perform as part of a trio in the museum of Chongqing and as a soloist in a recital at Beijing University.

In 2008 Catherine played principal flute under the baton of Maxim Vengerov in the Gala Concert of the Menuhin Competition with Joshua Bell and second flute in the closing concert with Rebecca Evans and Otaka Tadaaki with the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera.

Catherine is also involved in ensemble work. She is a member of the Bute Trio alongisde cellist Graham du Plessis and violinist James Sandalls. The trio perform at concerts and functions. Catherine is also a member of the Trio Chongqing (flute, guitar and voice), who regularly play at bussiness functions, schools and concerts. They recently played at the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff.

Alongside her work as a soloist and orchestral player, Catherine also teaches flute. She is currently working at Sidcot Private School and is involved in the Gwent Music Support Service.

  • NYOW Professional Assosiation of Teachers Award for the most promising woodwind player (2007)
  • Gwen Hughes Memorial Prize for best woodwind player (2001)
  • Rotary Club Young Musician Of The Year 1st prize, 1st round (2003)
  • National Finals of the National Eisteddfod (2003)

Teachers: Michael Cox, Sarah Newbold, Jonathan Burgess, Andrew Nicholson, Jonathan Snowdon, Philippa Russell and Joanna Shaw. Masterclasses with Philippa Davies, Ian Clarke and Fenwick Smith.

Catherine recently attended the British Flute society in July 2008, where she watched masterclasses from world class flute players.
