OutreachHigh on Brass10's list of priorities is the promotion of brass instruments through educational workshops and 'taster' sessions allowing school children to experience how brass instruments sound and demonstrate how they work. As well as running their own projects, Brass10 also works alongside the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, taking music into schools in West London and introducing children to orchestral music as well as the brass instruments found in the orchestra. As the Leverhulme Group Junior Fellowship Ensemble at the Royal College of Music, Brass10 has spent much time working with the RCM students in workshops and repertoire sessions, encouraging and assisting the students in setting-up and running their own brass ensembles. Brass10 also played a part in the Trinity College of Music Brass Massive 2005 in Blackheath Halls and are hoping to strengthen this link with TCM's education department. Brass10 has designed workshops for all levels, from nursery rhymes in kindergartens to performance and composition coaching with GCSE and 'A' level students. The three main levels of workshops are: 1: For the younger students (Key Stages 1-3), Brass10 offers 'Brass10 Boom', a lively introduction to brass instruments and different genres of music. They can also help with improvisation and group music-making, as well as taking live music to children who may otherwise, not experience it. 2: Older children (up to age 14) can be more reluctant to participate, so for them, there is 'Brass10 Educational Concerts'. Brass10 performs an entertaining and interactive concert of music, introducing the instruments and music in more depth and even giving the students a chance to conduct the group and join in with the 'Brass10 Big Blast' playing brass and percussion instruments. 3: GCSE and 'A' level students can require less of a lecture and more hands-on help from the players. Brass10 can be involved in performances of students' compositions, as well as offering helpful advice on how to write for brass instruments. Brass10 musicians can also run masterclasses for students who require an extra opinion on performance-based preparation. Members of Brass10 have substantial experience in educational work, having participated in projects such as 'LPO Playerlink Scheme', 'RPO Thames Festival Projects', The Philharmonia Orchestra's 'Stepping Stones', 'Mbira' & Carnival of the Animals' projects, 'Britten Sinfonia' and 'London Sinfonietta Project' . Most of the players in Brass10 also teach one-to-one, either privately or in schools around London. Brass10 appreciates that every occasion requires different material. Because of this, every workshop will be tailored to your specific needs. Brass10 is able to tie-in the workshop to academic work covered in the National Curriculum or the workshop can also be geared more towards promoting brass instruments in your school. Most musical requests can be met as Brass10 has composers and arrangers within and associated with the group. If you are interested in booking Brass10 for your school, or for more details, please contact Amy Wetmore, Brass10's education officer In May 2004 Brass10 were awarded the Philharmonia Orchestra / Martin Musical Scholarship Fund Outreach Award for their work promoting music in schools in the London area. |
Brass10 has built up an enviable record of competition success, having won the Royal Over-Seas League Ensemble Competition and Miller Trophy for its excellence in performance, and the Philharmonia Orchestra/Martin Musical Scholarship Fund Outreach Award for its work in education. The group has also won support from South East Music Schemes and a residency at the Royal College of Music as the Leverhulme Group Junior Fellowship Ensemble.
Already this year, Brass10 has been featured on it's own show on BBC Radio 2 and also continued it's collaboration with the distinguished composer Joseph Horowitz who continues to write music for them. Other Brass10 successes over the past 6 years include appearances at many of London's top concert venues including the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Buckingham Palace for Her Majesty the Queen's Golden Jubilee Celebrations. Brass10 has also performed at the Cheltenham International Festival of Music, Halesworth Arts Festival, Etchingham Festival and the Regent Hall Brass Arts Festival together with numerous live broadcasts and recordings for the BBC.
