Marsyas Trio Profile, Morgensterns Diary Service

The Marsyas Trio is a London-based flute-cello-piano ensemble performing internationally since 2009. Flautist Helen Vidovich, cellist Valerie Welbanks and pianist Fei Ren are Royal Academy of Music graduates. Past performances include a China tour in April 2013, and a UK West Country tour in 2012 for Concerts in the West. Other venues include the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria, Lake District Summer Music Festival, St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Forge, National Portrait Gallery, and St James' Piccadilly. The trio has appeared on Bulgarian National Television and Classic FM and was recorded by the Bulgarian National Radio. Upcoming recitals include St John Smith's Square and a residency with the Two Moors Festival.

Dedicated to the performance of music from all eras, the Marsyas Trio's core repertoire includes works by Haydn, Martinu, Weber and Crumb as well as lesser-known music by Gaubert, Goossens and Clementi. The ensemble is also proactive in presenting the works of living composers. The trio is currently collaborating with the British composer Laura Bowler on a project to be performed at the Arcola Theatre as part of the 2014 Grimeborn Festival. In 2011 the Marsyas Trio was awarded a commissioning grant from the PRS for Music Foundation for a new work by Elena Firsova. A Triple Portrait received its premiere at The Forge in London in April 2012. In 2014 the ensemble will be recording an album of Elena Firsova's chamber works, to be recorded and released under Meridian Records.

The Marsyas Trio has previously undertaken studies as part of the Chamber Studio at King's Place, as well as courses at the Lake District Summer Academy. Other coaching has been taken with members of the Chilingirian and Skampa Quartets, and with chamber musicians Carol Presland, Chris Elton and Michael Cox.

Marsyas Trio takes its name from Greek mythology - a dedication to the flute-playing satyr, Marsyas. According to the myth, Marsyas dared to compete in a musical contest with Apollo, God of the Lyre, winning the contest but losing his life to the envious wrath of Apollo. Marsyas thus saved his dying breaths for the instrument he immortalized. This mythology encapsulates the spirit of becoming a musician - symbolic of music as a passion.
