With "flair and commitment" (Classical Source, 2009), James has engaged audiences at most of the premier UK venues including the Wigmore Hall, the Cadogan Hall, the Bridgewater Hall and the Purcell Room, as well as throughout Europe and further afield. He has performed as soloist at many international festivals and been described by conductor, Benjamin Zander as "a great cellist, moreover a great musician". James has established reputation as a broad-minded musician open to new challenges. He has made his mark playing Indian Music and regularly performs with tabla maestri Kousic Sen and Sankar Prosad Chowdhury, as well as with the London Sitar Ensemble. He was educated in Indian music in Calcutta and Varanasi and later on in Basel at the Ali Akbar School of Indian Music under Ken Zuckerman. He is a laureate of numerous awards including the Royal Philharmonic Society Julius Isserlis Scholarship, a Hattori Senior award, the Muriel Taylor Cello Scholarship and many more. In 2006, James received the prestigious Soloists Diploma with distinction from the Basel Hochschule für Musik where he studied with Thoma Demenga. He previously studied with Hannah Roberts at the Royal Northern College of Music where he graduated with a first class honours degree and two diplomas. He has been a regular at the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove, an important source of inspiration for him, where he has received tuition from Steven Isserlis, Ralph Kirshbaum, Miklos Perenyi and Boris Pergamenschikow. He also regularly attends the Open Chamber Music at Prussia Cove in September. Chamber music is a great passion for James and in 2010 he founded the Beatson-Gould-Barralet trio comprising of three of the finest musicians of their generation with Alasdair Beatson (piano) and Thomas Gould (violin). James has made a number of arrangements for cello octet which have been performed internationally. He is a regular concerto soloist and forthcoming engagements include concerts with the Orchestra of the Swan and the New London Orchestra. James records for Landor records and is represented by Margaret Murphy Management. Orchestral Work James's orchestral work also includes Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, Aurora Orchestra, Heidelberger Kammerorchester, Guildford Symphony Orchestra (all guest principal cellist). Concertos with: The Orchestra of the Swan, Basel Symphony Orchestra, Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra, Kew Sinfonia, Lichfield Sinfonia, Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra, Croydon Symphony Orchestra.
